Spine is faded, chipped at one spot on spine and just a bit frayed at top spine tip. Worn in tiny spots to the cardboard at top edges and front fore edge. Name/date to top of inside board. Pages are very lightly age tanned. Boards are straight, tips are pointed, spine is square, pages are clean. Like so many of the early stories and novels, The American uses the sophisticated European background to throw into relief the New World qualities of innocence and honesty. Great Reading! .
boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
reprint : Any printing of a book which follows the original edition. By definition, a reprint is not a first edition.
age tanned : Used to describe a light brown or tan color that paper can sometimes assume as a result of age.
chipped : A defect in which small pieces missing from the edges.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
