Los Angeles, CA: Los Angeles County Museum. Good+ December 1981. Paperback. Text is clean. Cover shows normal wear with faint crease at lower corner of front cover and light rubbing along edges. Light bumping at corners. ; From the introduction: The Carter paintings astonish by their quality and then, when one has seen them all, by the distinct tast they reveal. Few great collections of Dutch painting have been so sharply focused: there are landscaptes and seascapes, town views, still lifes, and church interiorts by nearly all the major masters, and that is all. No portraits, no genre, no history paintings are included in this collection, which is not a survey of Dutch art and was never meant to be. Rather, the Carters have chosen to search out the most distinguished pictures that can be had in those categories that give them special pleasure and best suit the handsome, understated ambience of thier home. In these paintings Dutchmen celebrated and pondered the physical world, whether of nature or made by man, whether modest views of home or exotic scenery from abroad, whether humble household objects or the wonders of the garden. ; 121 pages .
