Spine and cover titles and front cover decoration printed in light green. Original light green slipcase with title in black at foot of front. Title page and colophon in red and black. Pages are unopened. "Five hundred copies of this book printed on Japan vellum small quarto and the type distributed in the month of July MDCCCCIX."--colophon. First (American) edition thus. Book is in Near Fine Condition: slight discoloration on back cover; slight darkening along edges of covers; otherwise clean and bright. Slipcase is in Poor Condition: separated into two sections; lacking upper and spine sections; lacking small amount of green paper from front section.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.

quarto : A term used generally to describe the approximate size of a book, a book that is about 10" to 12" tall and roughly squarish in shape. The term is based on the size of paper traditionally used by book printers which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.
vellum : A fine quality of parchment made from hide produced for binding or sometimes a writing surface. Sometimes used to describe paper which has been made to resemble true vellum.
