The August Stories - August and Elvie, Hunter and Tom , The Schooner Mary Ann and Granville Valley (4 Volume set)

New York: Dodd & Mead, 1871. Very hard to find as a first edition matched set. All volumes are first editions - Volumes 1 and 2 are dated 1871 on the copyright page and on the title page. Volume 3 is dated 1872 on the copyright page , volume 3 is dated 1872 on the title page and on the copyright page. Volume 2 in the listing of the books in the series has no name for Volume 4 and lists "in preparation". Common to all volumes - all volumes are tightly bound and square. NOT ex library books. Volumes 1, 2 and 4 a gift inscription written on the front end sheet - same inscription on each volume - "Charles Y. Audenried from Aunt Emma Christmas 1873 which leads me to conclude that this is indeed a matched set as they were apparently all owned by the same person. (I have no idea why Aunt Emma didn't inscribe the 3rd volume) . Volume 2 has light chipping to the front end sheet and to the frontispiece picture. All the books show light fraying to the tops and bottoms of the spines and have light bumping to the corners. All the bindings are exactly the same - brown cloth covered boards with black guild illustrations on the front cover, gold gilt lettering on the front covers and gold gilt lettering on the spine with black gilt decorations on the spine. This is a very nice looking set of books with lovely bindings. With the exception of the names being on the front end sheets the volumes appear to be notation free.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Collectible Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
