NY: Harper & Brothers, 1863 an original, bound volume for the year 1863, recording the battles of the American Civil War and other stories of the time; all issues complete and present; front board detatched but present; textblock has scattered light foxing, marginal moisture stains, and occasional closed edge tears, else very well preserved; some age-toning evident, but excellent contrast overall; profusely illustrated by Thomas Nast, Winslow Homer, Theodore R. Davis, A.R. Waud, Frank Beard and numerous other military and staff artists, most not identified; engravings from photographs by Matthew Brady and others are also liberally reproduced but the process of actual photo reproduction in printed books and magazines would not debut until the 1880's; many of the illustrations are full page, double-page, with hundreds of smaller vignettes; this volume was bound in 1867 at William H. Fisk's Book Bindery of Manchester NH, with binder's ticket tipped in at the gutter of the first issue; the boards and spine show moderate to heavy shelf wear; 832p. . First Edition.
