New York: Macfadden Publications, 1924. With the collaboration of Milo Hastings. xii, 372 p.: frontispiece, 40 pages of illustrations; 20 cm. (8 inches). Dark blue cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles; blind-stamped decoration on front cover. No dust jacket. Frontispiece is a portrait of the author. A small printed label on the back free endpaper indicating that the book was purchased at Strawbridge & Clothier in Philadelphia. The illustrations include photographs of tools to help test the purity of foods, modern kitchens and kitchen tools of the early 1920s, and various healthy foods, including chocolate corn bread. In addition to many recipes, sample menus are included for different types of diets: a diet made up of uncooked food, a lacto-vegetarian diet, and a light meat diet. Bernarr Macfadden (1868-1955) was a leader in the physical culture movement, which advocated bodybuilding along with attention to health and nutrition. He founded Physical Culture magazine. In Very Good- Condition: cover soiled; corners lightly rubbed; gilt is somewhat faded; stains on a few pages, as is typical of a cookbook that has been used.
