New York: Harper Magazine, 1895. Very good condition bound volume of Harpers New Monthly Magazine. Ex library book with usual library notations, stamps, etc. This was a reference book and does not have a card pouch. Very clean, tightly bound volume. The book is bound in black buckram with bright gold gilt lettering on the spine. The book is tightly bound and square. This is a bound volume which contains all the text of the issues, but does not contain the covers of any of the individual issues or the advertisements that were at the end of any of the issues. Of great interest to the collector , in this volume you will find the first appearance of Thomas Hardy's "The Simpletons" which starts in the December 1894 issue and continues chapter 26 in the last issue in the volume as " Hearts Insurgent" . Also of great interest is the first appearance of "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" by Mark Twain which appears under the name "The Sieur Louis De Conte". There are several chapters of the story contained in ths volume. There is an article about Fox Hunting in the United States by Caspar Whitney, another about New York Colonial Privateers, one about New York Slave Traders, and many other articles by popular writers of the day. The book pages are very clean. The body of the book shows no foxing. I saw one page with a piece chipped out of the edge. 976 numbered pages followed by several pages of literary notes. Very clean, tightly bound collectible book. This is a very well preserved book. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Collectible Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
