Facsimile reprint of 1869 edition published by New Bedford: Taber Bros. from the collection of the Sturgis Library, Barnstable, Massachusetts. Edition limited to 200, individual hand-numbered on the copyright page. Cloth binding, gilt titles, 46 pp. plus 6 pp. advertising. 12 pp. in color, reproduced from the original color lithographs. The second book in the Rarities from Sturgis Library series which makes available to readers and collectors modern reprints of rare and unusual books and manuscripts from the Library's collection. The Whaling Directory was originally published in 1869 and is now part of Sturgis' maritime archives. It was a unique reference book, with color lithographs of the house flags, printed for sea captains and all those concerned with the whaling industry, which enabled them to correctly identify whaling vessels from United States ports by their house flag, by name and with the name of their captain and owner both at port and on the high seas.
