Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. [nice tight clean copy, some miniscule bumping here and there, trace of browning to top page edges; jacket spine a little faded, moderate wear along right-hand edge of front panel (including one small puncture-tear at foldover)]. "One woman's struggle for equal rights and her excommunication from the Mormon church. [The author's] roots in the Mormon church went back for five generations. She'd been married for twenty years, was a dedicated homemaker and the mother of four children. Then, suddenly, her life began to come apart. Awakening feminism brought her into conflict with the church fathers who, finding her guilty of promoting false doctrine, excommunicated her. Her husband wanted a divorce, because he was, he said, 'tired of working on our marriage.' [Oh, boo hoo hoo.] Sonia Johnson was shattered. But she has prevailed [and] is now a heroine of the Equal Rights movement." She was a vocal proponent of the Equal Rights Amendment (forming an organization called Mormons for ERA in 1977), all the more so following her excommunication in 1979. She ran for President as the U.S. Citizens Party candidate in 1984, later came out as a lesbian, and has written another half-dozen or so books on gender/political issues. .
