1. Roman Antiquities, or An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Romans, Fourth Edition with Improvements
Adam, Alexander

Edinbugh: A. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1797. Fourth edition, with improvements. Full-leather binding. 8vo. 616 pp. including index. Alexander Adam was the noted rector of the High School at Edinburgh (Royal High School) that educated Henry Lord Brougham, the Lord Chancellor of England, and many other notables of the Scottish Renaissance. Edinburgh High School, which brought together students from all social classes, is one of the bright spots of early educational institutions. It became the model for the first public school in the United States - Boston Latin School. This was a textbook of Adam's own devising, written in English, a guide to Roman government and culture, with continuous references to classical literature. It caused some controversy when first published, but with the support of Principal Robertson of Edinburgh University, it was adopted by the High School. Laid paper, no foxing. Second free front endpaper clipped (likely to remove previous owner name). Rebacked with leather spine and spine label. Very good.. Fourth Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. 8vo.

5. A. Madhaviah: A Biography
Anantha Raman, Sita

New York: Oxford University Press, 2005. First Edition. 8vo. Cloth binding, 190 pp. This text includes a biography of the great 19th century Tamil social reformer, humanist and scholar A. Madhaviah (1872-1925), followed by a translation of his novel Muthumeenakshi: The Autobiography of a Brahmin Girl (1903). Madhaviah focused on the harsh conditions of female existence amongst the upper caste although he was not a pessimist. He supported widow remarriage and argued that the salvation of women and society lay in education. Madhaviah drew moral and literary validation for his ideas from classical Sangam Tamil texts but was also influenced by bourgeois notions of sexual restraint and female domesticity. Muthumeenakshi is a searing, realistic commentary on marital politics, sexuality, female illiteracy and patriarchy in 19th century south India. Madhaviah uses the autobiographical voice of a motherless Brahmin girl to make a plea for the reform of social customs that inhibited the sexual and educational lives of upper caste women. New in new dustjacket.. First Edition. Cloth. New/New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
