The Journals of William A. Lindsay An Ordinary Nineteenth-Century Physician's Surgical Cases
McDonnell, Katherine Mandusic, ed
Indianapolis IN: Indiana Historical Society. Fine in Very Good dust jacket; DJ scuffed, wear to corners, tiny chips at spine ends, light crease across tail edge of back. 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. Lindsay 1795-1876 left three journals, or common place books, of his experiences performing surgery in Indiana: generally on the kitchen table, in his street clothes, and without anesthesia or antiseptics. A very personal retelling of the surgeons routine, detailed surgical procedures, and the travails of the patient. Black and white illustrations of surgical instruments, patients, etc. Image of cover appears rubbed, but is actually an accurate reproduction of the poor condition of an oil portrait of the author. Jasper Hunnicutt of Jimpsonhurst
Votaw, Clarence E
Chicago IL: Union Book and Publishing Co.. Very Good+ with no dust jacket; Small bump to fore edge of back cover. Tiny rubs to spine corners. 1907. No edition stated. Hardcover. Fact-based, fiction that describes the daily life and working environment of a Postal Clerk with the Railway Mail Service at the turn of the century. Written in a straightforward, folksy style and actually provides a lot of background on how the mail moved in the days of manual labor. Author has added a great inscription in ink to the front endpaper: "To my friend _________ __________ of the old strenuous days when the postal service was SERVICE. With many good wishes of the feeble minded author". Slight ink transfer to front pastedown. Dedication page similarly inscribed "And to _________ __________ especially". Title page shows a copyright of 1907: the 1907 is underlined and "aged" added in ink in the same hand, to indicate that the author is 1907 years old. Slight ink transfer to verso of the half title. In green cloth with gilt title to front cover. No DJ, believed as-issued. Absolutely clean and crisp with clean, straight covers. A pleasant read, and somewhat scarce in this condition. VG+ for the small bump, but closer to Near Fine. ; 8vo; 194 pages .
