(7½ inches). First edition. Original red cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles; bevelled edges. Gilt-stamped illustration of an engine on front cover with glack-stamped embellishment; blind-stamped border and publisher's emblem on back cover. Black endpapers. The 32-page section following text contains publisher's catalog of works in engineering, architecture, agriculture, mathematics, mechanics, and science. Final 16 pages contain a list of the publisher's Weale's Series of rudimentary scientific, educational, and classical books. Part of a small bookdealer's label on back fixed endpaper. The folded plates are by Thos. Kell & Son, lithographers, and depict: the condensing beam engine by James Watt and Co., the horizontal semi-portable steam engine, the 1875 patent Galloway boiler, and additional views of the Galloway boiler. In Good+ Condition: cover is lightly soiled; ends of spine are starting to fray; text block is largely separated between p. 176 and p. 177; first folded plate is detached but present; upper corner of pp. 253-54 creased; the publisher's catalogs at the end of the volume have a number of creased and soiled corners; otherwise and clean and solid copy.. First Edition. Good+.
